To Love A Child
I had posted on Facebook this week about the charity I'm a board member of, To Love A Child and their Maternal Health Program.  I was so impressed with the outpouring of support!  While many of you are on Facebook, there are some holdouts so I wanted to use this Friday post to talk a bit more about the need and a couple easy ways you can help.

Who is To Love A Child?  TLC is a non-profit headquartered in Clifton Park that provides humanitarian assistance to impoverished children and their families throughout the world to help create a better future and quality of life for all. With programs in Haiti, Zimbabwe and here in the US, TLC works diligently to support its mission.

Haitian women in the Maternal Health Program
What is the Maternal Health Program
One of TLC's focus area's for 2011 is healthy mama's and healthy babies.  In Haiti, 1 out of 44 women die in pregnancy or childbirth.  That is alarming.  To Love A Child is taking measures to help with this situation by providing "Bundles of Love" birthing kits and "Bundles of Joy" newborn kits to the 50+ women in Haiti that are in our program.
HELP US to provide these kits by:
                Collecting the items listed here
Sewing reusable menstrual pads or cloth drawstring bags
Helping us to assemble the kits and prepare them for shipment
If you can help, please contact me, colleen@maltamama.com or call Cindy the director of To Love A Child at 518-859-4424.

Other ways to help, shop for the cause!

KIDS R.O.C. members
This Friday, two events are taking place that I wanted to pass along.  The first is an event organized by students at Malta Ave Elementary School.  This group of nine 3rd graders started a charitable organization called KIDS R.O.C. (Kids Reaching Out Club).  As far as I know, this is their first big event and it happens to benefit the children of Haiti, a country near and dear to my heart.  We are definitely going, and I will be running the 1.2 miles.  I ought to be able to do that seeing as I'm running the Freihofers 5K in a couple weeks!

KidsGiving is a children's charity event benefiting local non-profit, To Love A Child and co-hosted by MaltaMama.  The event is taking place on Friday, November 12th at TreePaad in Malta.  In addition to all the fun at TreePaad, KidsGiving will feature crafts and games for kids, live music, a silent auction, world handicrafts, a bake sale and more.  It's a great opportunity for kids to learn about how to help underprivileged children in Haiti and Zimbabwe and to raise money for an amazing charity organization.

Tickets are $12/child, and kids 2 and under are $8. Your ticket price includes two hours of unlimited play at TreePaad (including laser tag, rock climbing, and the other 'extras').  Contact me (colleen@maltamama.com) for tickets or stop by TreePaad to purchase.  I hope that many of you will join!

Bunco!
I've mentioned before that I am a board member of local charity To Love A Child.  This organization is fantastic and is doing some pretty amazing things to improve the lives of children in impoverished nations like Haiti and Zimbabwe, as well as programs for children here in the states.  In any case, next week we are having a charity Bunco tournament next Tuesday, September 28th at 7pm at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Fire Department (Old Rte. 146/Fire Road)  The cost is $25 and proceeds benefit To Love A Child.  No prior Bunco experience is necessary!  I have no idea what Bunco even is, so I'm glad rookies are welcome :-)  Hors d’oeuvres, desserts, wine, coffee & soda will be served.

Please pass this along to moms, grandmothers, neighbors, friends and anyone else who may be interested.  Email Michele Brobston: shel3179@msn.com to RSVP or if you have questions.

I picked today to post about a very important topic, and that is charity.  I am on the board of a local charity organization called To Love A Child.  The work of this organization is extremely important to me because its primary focus is on the health and well-being of underpriviliged children in Haiti, Zimbabwe and here in the USA.  I'm not going to get into everything that we do in this post, but we've just launched a new support campaign called Caring Hearts that I would like to tell you about.

We support the nearly 30 children that live at the Orphanage of Good Will in Haiti.  The orphanage was destroyed in the January earthquake, but we've thankfully moved all the children to a temporary location until we can rebuild.  We are the only organization providing support to this orphanage and these children.  The support includes basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, clothing, etc.  In addition to that Haiti site, we fund a pre-school in Zimbabwe and again, are the primary source of support.   We need $1,000 per month to provide for these children.  Help us to feed these children by committing money each month for their nutrition.

How can you help?
With your commitment of $10, $25, or $50 a month, we can feed these children!  If you've been looking for a way to teach your children about giving to others, this may be the perfect opportunity.  Kids can help by donating some of their allowance, selling some toys in a garage sale, having a lemonade sale, doing extra chores for money, etc.  $10 a month to donate to help feed children is not a lot.  It may mean skipping Dunkin' Donuts once or twice a month, eating out less, buying generic/store brands, clipping coupons, or any other ways to save a few bucks.  If you have any questions at all about this program, email me colleen@maltamama.com and I'd be happy to help.  I personally donate and it is very rewarding to know that my money is feeding children.
Payments may be made by:
Mail: To Love a Child, PO Box 165, Clifton Park, NY  12065
PayPal:
www.toloveachild.org  or Credit Card: call 518-859-4424

Thank you for considering this important initiative!

I know I mentioned this in Monday's post, but I am really excited about the benefit concert Saturday at Northern Lights.
It kicks off at 3pm and runs until 9pm, but you can stop by and/or leave whenever you (or your kids) feel like it.  As a reminder, the $10 admission (free for kids under 10) goes directly to the local charity To Love a Child.

Come see Garland Nelson and Soul Session; Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers, Vivid and Cryin’ Out Loud.   There will be a bounce house, food, a bake sale, raffles and face painting for the kids.

Northern Lights is located on Route 146 in Clifton Park.

Thanks to my soon-to-be mama friend Eva for sending this to me.  If you haven’t supported any Haiti-relief efforts yet, here’s another opportunity.  I’m sure you either have a child or at least know a child that could rock one of these super cute t’s from Positively Organic
50% of all sales will be donated to CARE’s Haiti relief efforts.  Both organic, the long sleeve onesie and varsity tee’s cost $22 or two for $40.  The onesie comes in sizes 0-3 up to 18-24.  The varsity tee is also available in other colors and goes up to 4T.
