If you have kids that are able to sit through a concert, or if you just want a night out for yourself, don't miss this event!  Thursday night at Skidmore College is the 'All Pull Together A Capella Extravaganza' at the Arthur Zankel Music Center in Filene Hall.  Singing groups from Skidmore College and the Saratoga community will be joining forces to raise money for ASPIRe NY, a community-based recreation and activity group for teens and young adults with social disorders.
The college a capella groups are pretty amazing and perform all kinds of music from classics to pop, r&b and rock.  School-aged kids would definitely be entertained.  In addition to five college groups, there's also a group from the Waldorf School in Saratoga and another community group.  The event is free, but donations to support ASPIReNY are appreciated.
Location: Arthur Zankel Music Center: Helen Filene Ladd Hall
Date: Thursday, 3/31
Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Attendance Info: There is no entrance charge, but donations will be taken at the door. Community members are encouraged to attend. This is a family-friendly event.

Shop & save!
This Friday and Saturday is the semi-annual Katrina Trask Nursery School consignment sale.  This is typically a very good sale with high quality items.  I've been in the past and found some nice kids shoes and clothing, and saw people leaving with really nice strollers, furniture, etc.
The sale starts Friday from 3pm-8pm and Saturday is a half-price day from 9am-1pm.  The sale is at the American Legion (34 West Ave., Saratoga Springs) across from the Amtrak station.
In their words...
In addition to raising money to help run our cooperative nursery school, we reach out to families and charities in need within the community and supply them with free clothing and gear by donating unsold items following the sale.

Out like a lamb... please!

I don't know about you, but I am sick of snow and quite frankly, I'm over March.  I just want it to go out like a lamb and move on.  I recall last year at this time Robby and I took the CDTA bus to Saratga and we were not wearing coats, feeding the ducks and enjoying the mild weather!  We had already started visiting some Parks & Playgrounds and were taking advantage of an early spring.  No doubt spring will come, I just hope it's sooner than later!
This week is the last week of the BACC Open Gym!  We had great fun at open gym this year.  I will miss it, but I'm hopeful that some playgrounds will soon take its place.  Also this week is Babies and Me at Round Lake Library, and story times on Thursday and Friday at the Ballston Spa Library.  Check them all out on the MaltaMama Calendar!   Have a great week-

Jake's Help from Heaven

A reader contacted me and asked if I would help promote a fundraising event for her friend that had recently lost her son.  I felt compelled to help out in any way I could.  Heather Straughter is a mother like you and me, only she has had to deal with the unimaginable loss of her son Jake.  I am humbled to share Heather's story...
Picture
My son Jake was born happy and healthy on May 4, 2006. So happy and healthy  - that we left Beth Israel Hospital in Boston the next day. He was eating well, sleeping well and doing great. Jake amazed us daily with his laid back spirit. In hindsight, we can look back and remember situations that were seemingly different but at the time I remember vividly being amazed at how “easy” Jake was. From a young age he just seemed to be wiser – he understood that his 15 month old brother, Ethan, was going to hug and kiss him, jump on him and demand lots attention. And from the beginning, Jake was fine with it. He was a great sleeper early on and rolled over for the first time at two months old. He really wanted to keep up with Ethan. At around 5 months, he stopped sleeping as well but we chalked it up to typical baby behavior. Things were still pretty easy. He ate well, gained weight, babbled, crawled, scooted and fed himself over the next three months. And then when he was a little over 8 months old, it all changed.

This Friday is the next family film night at the Ballston Spa Public Library.  This week, the movie is Yogi Bear and it starts at 6pm.   Yogi Bear is a lighthearted comedy featuring everyone's favorite smarter-than-average bear, Yogi, and his pal Boo-Boo. Ranger Smith and his assistant Ranger Jones are charged with keeping everything running smoothly in Jellystone Park, which basically translates into keeping Yogi's obsession with stealing people's picnic baskets under control and stocking the pamphlet stand. Come along on the mad-capped adventure that will leave the whole family howling with laughter!
This event is free, starts at 6pm and is open to the public. The movie is rated PG and runs for 80 minutes.

For more information please call 885-5022.  Ballston Spa Public Library is located at 21 Milton Avenue (Rt. 50).

When should I call the pediatrician? Find out this week!

03/22/2011

On Thursday, March 24th at noon at the Malta Library there is a seminar called "Aaaa-Choo! Kids, colds and allergies: When to call the Pediatrician".  Pediatrician Martin Breen will be presenting.  Description:  With all the sniffling, sneezing, and coughing this time of year, it's tough to know whether your child suffers from the common cold, or if there is a more serious underlying condition. Learn about the signs and symptoms that should have you calling your pediatrician.
Seems a little late in the season to have this type of seminar, but I think it is valuable information.

During the seminar, there will be a special children's story time and activity so parents can attend!  Great idea!  To register please call the Library at 682-2495.
