Lake George Opera-to-Go is performing “Three Little Pigs” at Schenectady's Civic Playhouse this weekend!  "Three Little Pigs" is a short one-act children's opera.  I love the idea of exposing the little one's to cultural activities like this.  Best of all, the opera is free!  A short reception with cookies and punch will follow the opera.
When:  Saturday, February 27th at 2:30pm
Where:  Schenectady Civic Playhouse: 12 S. Church St., Schenectady.
Reservations are suggested by calling 518-382-2081

Starting in March, new (and more!) Open Gym times in Malta

Open Gym
The Malta Community Center's beautiful new gym is in use a lot these days.  However, anytime there is nothing scheduled for a block of time, they allow for Open Gym which means anyone can use the gym free of charge.  It figures that as soon as nice weather starts to hit, they are offering more of these Open Gym times!  Still, with the rain likely this spring, it will be nice to know you can take the kids out of the house and let them run around a bit.

Times are subject to change, but here's a quick rundown:
Monday:  11:30am - 12:00,  3:00pm - 5:00pm
Tuesday:  9:00am - 4:00pm
Wednesday:  1:00-3:00 (open net play)  3:00-5:00 (12+ only)
Thursday:  10:00am - 12:00 (open net play)  3:00pm - 5:00pm (12+ only)
Friday:  10:30 - 12:00,  1:00 - 6:30pm
Saturday:  9:00 - 10:00, 11:30 - 12:00

Deals!
I wanted to pass along a sweet deal on a very cool diaper bag from Kate Spade.  It’s KS’s annual Sample Sale and there are lots of bags on the site marked down.  Shipping is also free!  The bag shown is called the Creative Coal Baby Bag and is marked down from $295 to $139.  Would also make a great gift for a mom-to-be!

I did not leave out the guys today either.  Right now at Backcountry.com get your man The North Face Denali fleece jacket for just $85.95 in select colors.  Original price on this jacket is $165.  The color shown is called Phantom Red and it’s on sale for $85.95.  Enjoy the snow and some great shopping!

Recycling: Single Stream is like a lazy river!

Visit County Waste online
If you're a customer of County Waste for garbage/recycle pickup, you may have noticed a shiny new recycling cart landed in your driveway this past week.  While the cart itself is pretty big, the news attached to the cart is even bigger, and that is SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING!  What this means is that everything you previously had to sort; paper, plastics, glass, cans, etc., now can be dumped into one large bin where it will get sorted at a County Waste facility.  This is huge for people who may not have recycled in the past because it was too time-consuming, too complicated, too messy, etc.  It can't get any easier than single stream!

I bet if you went through your garbage right now, nearly half of what you threw away could have been recycled.  Most of us know to recycle plastic, glass, newspapers and cans, but did you know that you can recycled ALL of your junk mail, magazines, phone books, paper egg cartons, juice boxes, aerosol cans, aluminum foil?  As always, through County Waste you can't recycle food waste, diapers, clothing, styrofoam, plastic bags, compost and yard waste.

Thanks County Waste for making recycling so much easier for us!

Weekend Best Bet: NOT the B Spa Winter Fest!

This weekend was supposed to mark the 15th annual Ballston Spa Winter Festival.  A fun, family-filled day of sledding down Bath Street and various other activities.  Due to 'lack of snow' the event has been cancelled.  While it is a quiet weekend for events, it may be fun to go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the Saratoga State Park, hit the live music scene at the Jonesville Country Store, head to Bettie's for cupcakes, Whistling Kettle for tea, or find a new fun spot on my Get out of the house page.  Whatever you do, don't try to go sledding down Bath Street in Ballston Spa.
Have a great weekend mama's!

Britax sale
Mama's, if you're in the market for a car seat, or think you may be in the next six months, head over to AlbeeBaby on the web and check out their Britax sale.  For a limited time, you can pick up the top-rated Britax Marathon carseat in patterns like Strawberry or Emma (shown in the picture) for just $179, regular $299.  That's a really great deal!  We own both a Britax Marathon and the smaller Roundabout and are very happy with both.  Britax is consistently a top-rated car seat brand in terms of safety and ease of use.  Drive safe and shop often!

Review: The Whistling Kettle Tea Lounge

Whistling Kettle
This past Monday I visited the Whistling Kettle tea lounge in Ballston Spa with my mom and Robby.  It was a holiday so the place was packed, but we were fortunate to get seated right away.  We were given a children's menu and a glass (yes, glass) container of crayons.  If you haven't been here before, it is a really cozy place with a huge selection of teas and 'tea snacks' such as scones, sandwiches, soups, crepes, quiche's, etc.
The first pot of tea I asked for, a Roibus tea called Simba was out of stock, so I settled on a peach Roibus tea which was excellent.  A 'pot' of tea was $3.50 and is enough for two people to have about a cup and a half.  The children's menu left a lot to be desired, with no real 'finger foods' just sandwiches.  I'm sure that would have worked for an older child, but for my toddler it was a no go.  Not a big deal, we just ordered a scone and I had a cup of the soup special apple butternut squash.  The food was tasty and fresh, and as I mentioned, the tea was excellent.  Overall the stop was a good one and I would definitely go back.  I will probably do lunch at home and go for an afternoon tea and snack with children, or a nice quiet evening minus kids.

Details:
The Whistling Kettle Tea Lounge, 24 Front Street Ballston Spa
Hours: Saturday-Thursday 11am-6pm, Friday 11am-8pm

This weekend, the Round Lake Library is hosting a Sweetheart of a Book Sale from Saturday through Monday the 15th.  Shop from a selection of over 10,000 books, videos, CDs/DVDs, books on tape, and lots more, all at the former Northway Travel Trailer showroom at 2570 Route 9, right next door to Just Meats.  Officials are saying that the event space will be set up just like a traditional bookstore with books arranged by genre, so shopping should be easy and fun!

Hours are Saturday-Monday 9am-4pm and all proceeds benefit the Round Lake Library.  For more information, call 518-899-2285.
